fishing

Yesterday afternoon we went fishing with my friend Deena and her son K. Here is R., trying his hand with the reel.

One of the things I love about Deena is that she always has a Big Idea, whether it's teaching a yoga class on the beach, or organizing a New Years' luau at a big hotel, or opening an American school like the one where we teach (only better), or ocean fishing.

We didn't end up catching anything, but it was a beautiful late afternoon at the beach nonetheless.

Only E. was disappointed; he had really been expecting us to bring home dinner.

He got over his disappointment, though. Here he is acting silly with his good friend K.

When we left to get Ju home in time for supper and bed, Deena and K. were still casting out, beneath a beautiful pale slip of a full moon.

I love reading the short stories of your young families life and goings on! One minute you’re up, the next minute you’re wondering if corporal punishinent (spankings) should be brought back! Trust me, you and Dan are doing a fine job. Your mother’s intuition has kicked in and has you wondering about leaving the situation you are in and maybe returning to the states.

Sister let me tell you about the states. You mentioned that at school they are teasing the boys, well in the states the kids will pick fights with the boys. You know black eyes and bloody noses, or have you forgotten this? And E and R are acting out, that’s just a form of energy and their way of saying they do not like the teasing. And sooner or later E or R is going to pop one of those kids dead in his mouth (the American way) and from then on they will leave the brothers alone.

I live out side of Atlanta, GA. They are firing teachers everyday because of the economy, and the school systems are deep in dept. Time and tenure means nothing anymore. Fifty eight teachers and the superintendent of schools have been indicted for grade fraud this week alone. And to top it off, Georgia State, Georgia Tech and thousands of undergrad and grad institutions and laying off professors. These are very hard times in the states right now. They are cutting everything, insurance, you name it.

You and Dan have contracts to teach in Bahia, the boys are learning to live in a totally different culture. It will get easier on the boys. Just keep telling them they are special and help them with their homework (Portuguese) like you always do.

You give so much to others. You teach people to talk about their problems, battle depression and bad health with hatha yoga, meditation, walking, exercise, eating properly and just good thoughts. Maybe you need to repractice (is that a word?) what you teach! And remember your kids are fighters.
