Two days ago, in Florida, I saw a man in the pool swimming laps and I realized he had one leg. I watched as he pulled himself out, stood in his crutches, opened the gate, and hopped off. How brave, I thought! I wonder if the boys feel the same way?
A published poet, Ph.D. dropout, and former Peace Corps volunteer, I've lived on an active volcano in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, beside a frozen lake in the Upper Midwest, at the edge of the mystical dunes of Abaeté in Brazil.
Now I live with my husband and three sons in the Philadelphia suburbs.
